Our story · est. 2019, Sonoma CA
Butter, but better.
Golden Rule is a small-batch butter company in Sonoma, California. We make cultured butter, compound butter, and ghee — slowly, in small batches, with cream from grass-fed cows we know by name.

The rule
Three commitments.
Grass-fed cream, only
From small Sonoma dairies. Pasture rotation. No antibiotics, no hormones. The cream is yellower, more beta-carotene, and makes better butter.
Slowly cultured
18 hours with live cultures. Tangy, complex, almost French. We've never understood why this takes most American butter brands 0 hours.
Made small, by hand
Every tub is hand-stamped. Every batch is churned by a person we know. If a batch fails, we throw it out and start over.
Timeline
Seven years, summarized.
2019
A borrowed kitchen in Healdsburg
Lina Marlow makes the first batch of cultured butter in a borrowed Vita-Prep. It's not great. The next one is better. The third is something she keeps eating off the spoon.
2020
The first farmer
Kingsbury Family Dairy agrees to supply grass-fed cream. The relationship is built on one rule: no compromise on what the herd eats.

The first regional stockist. Our tubs land in 47 stores across Northern California in a single weekend.
2022
We launch the bundles

Lactose-free, high smoke point. The natural extension of our cultured cream, finally stable on the shelf.
